Maxine Waters Service Area is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), with authority to issue credits for high school courses and to issue eighth grade and high school diplomas. We offer all courses required for a high school diploma and prepare students to pass the mandated California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). Students can complete their courses at the learning center (individualized instruction lab), in teacher-directed classes, or through the adult independent study (home study) program.
There are three options available to the student to receive an adult high school diploma through the Diploma "Plus" Program:
• Complete all 34 courses (170 credits), or
• Pass either the General Education Development test (GED) in English OR the High School Equivalency Examination and complete 50 credits in specific subjects, or
• Pass the GED in Spanish or French plus 70 credits in specific subjects.
A student may be granted credits from courses previously taken at another accredited secondary or foreign school equivalent to high school level. Credits may also be granted for some paid work experience and for military service.
Students are encouraged to take practice tests prior to registering for any official standardized tests. The California High School Equivalency Exam will be available around March 2014. For more information click on the link below: http://adulted-lausd-ca.schoolloop.com/HSEtestcenter
Most core academic courses offered at MWSA meet the University of California and California State University "a-g" freshman entrance admission.
